Character Jug Description

This is a large Royal Doulton China Cavalier Character Jug. (also sometimes referred to as a Toby or Toby Mug)

Cavalier Name Origin

Royalist soldiers, called Cavaliers, fought for King Charles I during the English Civil War.  The label Cavalier derived from the soldiers' gallant and haughty temperament.  Royal Doulton first listed this character as The Laughing Cavalier in reference to a Frans Hals painting.
