This is an Old Charley Character Jug in large size by Royal Doulton China. These pieces are also sometimes referred to as a Toby or Toby Mug.
Old Charley Name Origin
During the reign of Charles II, "watchmen" nicknamed Charlies, walked the streets of London, announcing the time of day, and keeping peace and order in the general public. It was not until the early 1800’s that a version of the modern day Policeman replaced the Charlies.
