Jean Carzou, Lines as the Architecture of his Art
Born Karnik Zouloumian in Aleppo, Syria, this artist made his way to France where he graduated in architecture. He then attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, an art school in Paris as an autodidact. He changed his name to Carzou by using the syllables of his first and last name and then adopting the French nickname Jean. He began painting influenced by Cubism but eventually abandoned this to establish his own unique style. Connecting lines to represent cities, buildings, boats, figures, etc. was an obvious influence from his architectural studies.
